This course will give you an understanding of the fundamental concepts of thermodynamics from the point of view of physics, chemistry and engineering. It is split into two MOOCs. Part I: Fundamental principles of thermodynamics. (automatic translation)
Professor J.-Ph. Ansermet from EPFL and his collaborator Dr. Sylvain Bréchet have brought together all the fundamental principles of thermodynamics in four lessons. The second part of the MOOC illustrates the thermodynamic approach through a series of applications presented by specialists from various partner institutions in the RESCIF network. The aim of the course is to help students understand and apply the fundamental concepts of thermodynamics. Following a presentation of the first and second principles of thermodynamics, the lecture will address questions of irreversibility and thermodynamic potentials. After establishing these conceptual foundations, their engineering applications, such as heat transfer, calorimetry and phase transitions, will be discussed. Next, the chemical viewpoint will be presented to tackle the conversion of chemical energy into electricity. Finally, more advanced topics will be covered, namely thermodynamic cycles, thermal machines, thermodynamic concepts adapted to continuous media and finally transport processes. Professor J.-Ph. Ansermet, who is the instigator of this course, has surrounded himself with experts and specialists in the various fields of application who teach thermodynamics in various partner institutions of the RESCIF network, i.e. Professor Michael Grätzel and Doctor Sylvain Brechet from EPFL, Professors Paul Ekam, Théophile Mband, Marthe Boyomo and André Talla from ENSP Yaoundé, Professor Miltiadis Papalexandris from UCL Louvain, Professor Etienne Robert from Polytechnique de Montréal, Professors Marwan Brouche and Chantal Maatouk from Université St-Joseph de Beyrouth.
